Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who ran away following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area displayed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister said.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.
According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
The official thought the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
