England's Assistant Coach Shares His Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. The approach include player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire for improvement knows no bounds. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those convinced and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to work together again. The FA consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
