Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
