Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Victories After Recent Arrests
Miami scored eighty-six first-half points against the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match after guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.
But, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half points to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."

After racking up 43 scores in a season-opening loss to the Warriors, the Slovenian put up 49 scores - to go with 11 rebounds and 8 assists - as the Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-110.
Greek player Giannis Antetokounmpo also had a strong performance with 31 points, twenty boards and seven passes in the Bucks' 122 to 116 win over the Toronto Raptors.
Houston Rockets were beaten 115-111 by the Detroit Pistons even with thirty-seven scores from Kevin Durant, while Victor Wembanyama had twenty-nine scores, 11 rebounds and 9 rejections in the San Antonio Spurs' extra-time victory over the New Orleans.
