The veteran filmmaker is now considered more than a historical storyteller; his name is a franchise, an unparalleled production entity. With each new documentary series premiering on the television, everyone seeks an interview.

The filmmaker completed “more fucking podcasts than I ever thought possible”, he says, nearing the end of his extensive publicity circuit that included numerous locations, 80 screenings and innumerable conversations. “With podcasts numbering in the hundreds of millions, I feel I’ve participated in a substantial portion.”

Thankfully Burns is a force of nature, as expressive in conversation as he is prolific during post-production. The 72-year-old has gone everywhere from prestigious venues to mainstream media outlets to discuss a career-defining series: The American Revolution, a comprehensive multi-part historical examination that occupied a substantial portion of his recent years and premiered this week on public television.

Timeless Filmmaking Method

Like slow cooking in an age of fast food, Burns’ latest project intentionally classic, reminiscent of historical documentary classics as opposed to modern online content and podcast series.

But for Burns, whose professional life chronicling strands of US history including baseball, country music, jazz and national parks, the nation’s founding transcends ordinary historical coverage but essential. “I said this to my co-director Sarah Botstein during our discussions, and she shared this view: no future work will carry greater importance,” Burns reflects by phone from New York.

Comprehensive Scholarly Work

Burns, co-directors Botstein and David Schmidt plus scripting partner Geoffrey Ward drew upon countless written sources plus archival documents. Numerous scholars, spanning age and perspective, offered expert analysis along with leading scholars covering various specialties such as enslavement studies, Native American history and the British empire.

Signature Documentary Style

The film’s approach will feel familiar to fans of historical documentaries. The characteristic technique included slow pans and zooms over historical images, generous use of period music featuring talent interpreting primary sources.

This period represented the filmmaker cemented his status; decades afterwards, presently the respected veteran of historical films, he seems able to recruit any actor he chooses. Participating with Burns at a recent event, acclaimed writer Lin-Manuel Miranda commented: “Nobody declines an invitation from Ken Burns.”

Remarkable Ensemble

The extended filming period provided advantages concerning availability. Sessions happened at professional facilities, at historical sites through digital platforms, a method utilized during the pandemic. Burns recounts collaborating with actor Josh Brolin, who made time during his travels to record his lines portraying the founding father prior to departing to subsequent commitments.

Additional performers feature multiple distinguished artists, Jeff Daniels, Morgan Freeman, Paul Giamatti, emerging and established stars, household names and rising talent, celebrated film and stage performers, British and American talent, skilled dramatic performers, small and big screen veterans, and many others.

Burns adds: “Honestly, this could represent the finest ensemble recruited for any project. Their contributions are remarkable. They’re not picked because they’re celebrities. It irritated me when questioned, about the prominent cast. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They represent global acting excellence and they animate historical material.”

Multifaceted Story

However, no contemporary observers remain, visual documentation required the filmmakers to rely extensively on the written word, combining individual perspectives of numerous historical characters. This approach enabled to show spectators not just the famous founders of the revolution but also to “dozens of others who are seminal to the story”, numerous individuals never even had a portrait painted.

The filmmaker also explored his individual interest for maps and spatial representation. “I love maps,” he notes, “and there are more maps throughout this series versus earlier productions I’ve done combined.”

Worldwide Consequences

The production crew recorded at nearly a hundred historical locations across North America plus English locations to capture the landscape’s character and partnered extensively with living history participants. Various aspects converge to present a narrative more violent, complex and globally significant than the one taught in schools.

The revolution, it contends, transcended provincial conflict over land, taxation and representation. Conversely, the project presents a blood-soaked struggle that eventually involved numerous countries and surprisingly represented described as “the noble aspirations of humankind”.

Brother Against Brother

What had begun as a jumble of grievances directed toward Britain by colonial residents throughout multiple disputatious regions soon descended into a vicious internal war, dividing communities and households and turning communities into battlegrounds. During the second installment, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The greatest misconception about the American Revolution centers on assuming it constituted a unifying experience for colonists. This omits the fact that it was a civil war among Americans.”

Sophisticated Interpretation

In his view, the independence account that “for most of us suffers from excessive romance and wistful remembrance and lacks depth and doesn’t have the respect for what actually took place, and all the participants and the incredible violence of it.

Taylor maintains, an uprising that declared the transformative concept of fundamental personal liberties; a bloody domestic struggle, pitting Patriots against Loyalists; and a global war, continuing previous patterns of struggles among European powers for control of the continent.
