We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
